Corrections and Updates Policy

How we handle reported mistakes, changed fishing rules, broken official links and meaningful revisions to published guides.

Independent informationUnited States & CanadaOfficial sources first

Our commitment to correcting errors

Even a carefully reviewed fishing guide can become inaccurate when an agency changes a licence fee, issues a closure, revises a fishing season or moves a purchase portal. Our editorial goal is to make supported corrections clearly and not leave known significant errors unaddressed.

We take reports seriously, including complaints about misidentified jurisdictions, missing exceptions, misleading instructions, dead links and factual mistakes. We evaluate a report against the latest available original source rather than modifying an article solely because a commenter disagrees.

How to submit a correction

  1. Locate the page. Copy the complete article URL and note the section or sentence in question.
  2. Describe what is wrong. Explain the specific fact or instruction that may need changing, and which anglers it affects.
  3. Identify the jurisdiction. Include state, province or territory, area or waterbody, fish species and effective date if relevant.
  4. Provide supporting material. Share a current official notice, agency webpage, rulebook, government form or authoritative document.
  5. Contact the editorial team. Email contact@fishing-licenses.org with the subject “Correction request” and a summary of the issue.

Please do not email account passwords, copies of IDs, payment-card details or other unnecessary sensitive information.

How we evaluate a report

  • Confirm the affected content: Identify the paragraph, table, instruction or link that may be wrong.
  • Assess the source: Determine whether it comes from the agency with authority for that place, species and period.
  • Check timing and scope: Distinguish a prospective rule change from an existing rule, or a statewide policy from a lake-specific restriction.
  • Decide the appropriate action: Correct a factual statement, add missing qualification, revise a portal step, update an external link, or leave the information unchanged if the claim is supported.
  • Review the revision: Check the amended text for unintended contradictions and, where appropriate, link to the newer official source.

Some matters require more investigation than a link fix. We do not promise a uniform response or resolution deadline for every submission, but significant safety or regulatory errors should be prioritized in the editorial workflow.

Types of edits and transparency

Minor updates

Formatting, grammar, clearer examples and the replacement of a broken link that still points to the same official information may be handled as routine maintenance.

Substantive corrections

Changes affecting an individual’s license obligations, fee, eligibility, season, legal limit, purchasing path or interpretation warrant careful source review. Where practical, a significant correction should be accompanied by a clear update note in the affected article.

New rule years and periodic maintenance

A current-year update should not silently retain outdated last-year fees or restrictions. Articles should distinguish past and present rules, and clearly signal when visitors must check an official live notice.

Withdrawals or major rewrites

If core guidance proves unreliable or cannot be verified, we may substantially rewrite, temporarily unpublish or retire the page rather than continue to circulate misleading information.

Always check the live regulation

Critical reminder: Emergency restrictions, special waters, conservation closures and temporary orders may change between website reviews. For real-time compliance, check the responsible regulator before fishing.
